Newdow pledge arguments rerun at 9th circuit
Dan Levine has this report on Law.com discussing yesterday’s 9th Circuit arguments in the cases brought by Michael Newdow challenging references to God in the Pledge and on currency. Levine includes this interesting tidbit:
In the "In God We Trust" case, Newdow argued that the appearance of the motto on currency violates the establishment clause, because in the course of normal life activities it makes atheists advertise a belief with which they do not agree. Newdow also pointed out that the Old Testament commands that all atheists be put to death. "I don’t think I should be required to carry around something that says I trust someone who wants to kill me," Newdow said, prompting Reinhardt to break into a wide smile.
