Marriage and Voter’s Right on Trial in Oregon Today

The Salem Statesman Journal is reporting that the, Domestic-partner case will be heard by judge today.  The report observes:

The group is represented by the Alliance Defense Fund, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., which supports social conservatives. They argue that officials should have gone to greater lengths to verify the disputed signatures.

"No matter what the issue is in the case, the principle is the same," said Greg Scott, a spokesman for the group. "These Oregonians were denied their right to engage in the political process, and we were asked by Oregonians to come in and stand up for them."

The voters have asked Judge Michael Mosman to order the state to put the law on the ballot.

"The heart of this dispute is over election law," Lozano said. "But the heart of this matter is that we have outside groups coming into this state trying to tell Oregonians how to live. Oregonians are fair-minded, or this law would not have passed."

The media has played this up as a homosexual "rights" case as opposed to a voter’s rights case.  While voter’s rights is the primary issue in this case, the case will impact the future of marriage in Oregon.
