Cal. initiatives could approve largest gambling expansion in history



The campaigns for and against statewide initiatives have drawn more than $160 million in donations and fueled advertising blitzes that have outstripped those of the presidential campaigns in the state.

Most of that money has been spent on four ballot measures that would affirm gambling deals Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger struck with four Southern California tribes. Approval would launch one of the single biggest expansions of casino gambling in U.S. history.

The agreements allow the tribes to add 17,000 slot machines, enough to fill eight Las Vegas-size casinos. In exchange, they would share hundreds of millions of dollars in winnings with the cash-strapped state each year . . .
