Texas Governor slams the ACLU attack on the Boy Scouts and Christianity

W. Gardner Selby reports on the Austin American Statesman (2.11.2008):

. . . Meanwhile, some excerpts from Perry’s book, which questions the American Civil Liberties Union’s efforts to open the Boy Scouts of America to gays and people who don’t declare a belief in God:

“Only they know, but isn’t it odd that the ACLU, which champions First Amendment rights, wants them applied selectively? It seems some of the most intolerant acts occur in the name of tolerance; a paradox that seems to describe much of the ACLU’s political agenda.”

“The point is that Scouting is not the place for sex education. When a gay or lesbian leader makes an issue of his or her sexual preference, it makes it impossible to remove sexual conduct from the Scouting realm.”

“Though I am no expert on the ‘nature versus nature’ debate, I can sympathize with those who believe sexual preference is genetic. It may be so, but it remains unproved. Even if it were, this does not mean we are ultimately not responsible for the active choices we make. Even if an alcoholic is powerless over alcohol once it enters his body, he still makes a choice to drink. And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.”

“A loving, tolerant view toward those who have a different sexual preference is the ideal position—for both the heterosexual and the homosexual. I do not believe in condemning homosexuals that I know personally. I believe in valuing their lives like any others, as our God in heaven does… Tolerance is a two-way street. The Boy Scouts is not the proper intersection for a debate over sexual preference.”

“The ACLU’s focus is almost exclusively on efforts to curb Christianity.”

That settles it! My wife and I are moving to Texas! :o) Can you imagine if we had a governor saying things like this in California? (I know, but I can still dream.)

It’s almost another universe you peop;le live in. “When a gay or lesbian person makes an issue of their orientation. . . “? Kindly to point me to one recorded issue where that has ever happened. It seems to be the rabid bigots who have surruptiously taken control of the BSA who make an issue of it at all.

Certainly, any supposed gay or lesbian actions within the BSA are not so well recorded as the perversions reported two or three times a week with the pastors of various Xtian money making scams. Ted Haggard anyone? As a role model?

Its so obvious that the american criminal liberties union..sorry I mean the civil liberties union, who always claim fairness and gee we just want all to be equal never seem to curb evil only good..it was 1919 and my favorite president died..Theodore Roosevelt..He is the father of scouting…in a speech delivered several years before he advocated a sound mind in a sound body…hundreds of thousands of kids joined and in 1939 it got serious…TRs boy scouts versus Hitlers nazi youth..a titanic struggle over the minds and bodies of people everywhere..guess who won??? The aclu would have watered down that organization so much that the entire outcome of WW2 would be different. This year marks the 150th anniversery of TRs birth…lest we forget…Nino

To Greg: I mean this respectfully, but Ted Haggard is not an example. He hid his actions from others, so how were obedient Christians to know what he was doing? The example is Jesus Christ, not Ted Haggard.
Secondly, there are no gay reported actions within BSA in part because BSA does not welcome openly gay people to join. If they did, one can look to the Gay Pride parades and other such events to see how openly gay people act sometimes. They’re not wearing suits or other respectable clothing when they parade down the streets. They’re naked or almost naked, wearing provocative clothing and behaving in a sexually suggestive manner. Is that what people want around their sons?

As a Scout leader, I appluade the Governor. The ACLU has been systematically trying to rewrite the US constitutionin it’s own perverted image for quite some time now. As a Scout Leader I am expected to present a positive role model to these young men (and women in some programs). That includes no tobacco use or alcolhol use in their presences. It also includes setting a good moral example. An openly homosexual leader would, in my opinion, set a very confusing -at least- example of morality since homosexuality is condemned by most major religions. Religion is a very important part of the Boy Scouting experience. The religious preference of the Memeber is strictly between them, their families and their God. However, they must adhere to the statement of religious priciples at the core of Scouting, placed their by Lord Baden Powell.
