Delaware concerned about infant mortality rates
Gov. Ruth Ann Minner will spend $1.3 million on statewide efforts to reduce the infant mortality rate, Kelly Bothum reports:
For years, Delaware’s infant death rate has been among the highest in the country, based on population. There were 104 infant deaths out of 11,603 Delaware births in 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available. That works out to slightly more than nine infant deaths per 1,000 births, a figure that hasn’t changed much in recent years.
Planned Parenthood makes an appearance:
At Planned Parenthood, it’s Diana Hartley’s job to get woman thinking about their own health, regardless of whether they plan to have children in the future. Hartley, community services director for Planned Parenthood, helps women set reachable goals to improve their overall health, such as quitting smoking or taking vitamins daily. It’s based on the Healthy Women Have a Plan program offered by Planned Parenthood, which received a grant from the state for pre-conception education. Women need not be pregnant or even considering becoming pregnant to get help.
