The Weekly Standard carries this commentary by Leon R. Kass (2.25.2008). He writes:
Until now, the cloning debate has been hopelessly entangled with the stem cell debate, where the friends and the enemies of embryonic stem cell research have managed to produce a legislative stalemate on cloning . . . Three important values, differently weighted by the contending sides, were (and are) at issue in the debates about cloning and embryonic stem cells: scientific and medical progress, the sanctity of human life, and human dignity.
Kass argues that technological developments now offer an opportunity to reach consensus on each of the important values.
