Iowa: Proposed Core Curriculum Impacts Private Education
The Iowa Family Policy Center has forwarded this update:
Private school parents, teachers, and administrators are concerned about core curriculum legislation (SF 2216) being considered by the Iowa Legislature. A number of private school officials came together this week to voice concern over curriculum that would be mandated by the state to maintain accreditation. The legislation is trying to use accreditation as a tool to extort private schools into accepting state curriculum items.
The private schools would like to maintain the option to choose all, some, or none of the model core curriculum proposed by the state based on what they believe is best for their students, rather than be required to adopt it. There is additional concern that if the state begins to mandate curriculum, it will open the door for continued curriculum mandates, including sex ed and social issues.
