UCAN reports:
Isidro Caballes is known locally as “Mr. Kidney” because he sold his kidney in 1998 to an ailing student so he could pay off the mortgage on his land. The 52-year-old farmer told UCA News on April 10 that since his kidney was taken, his body has weakened. His hand trembled as he lifted a coffee cup at his home in Langgawisan . . . Caballes sold his kidney for a little more than the equivalent of US$1,000 . . .
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in January condemned organ trafficking and urged the government to continue its efforts toward “holistic” organ gathering and distribution.
