WASHINGTON — Alliance Defense Fund Senior Counsel Glen Lavy, who recently argued before the California Supreme Court to defend marriage, will participate in a panel discussion Thursday on the national implications of the California Supreme Court’s May 15 marriage decision. The Family Research Council is hosting the event at the National Press Club in Washington.

“We hope the high court will respect the democratic process by waiting to see what the people of California desire when it comes to the meaning of marriage,” Lavy said. “The people of California have a constitutional right to vote on marriage, and the court can avoid the possibility of significant and unnecessary legal and social problems both in California and across the nation by letting Californians vote before implementing the May 15 decision.”

ADF attorneys filed a petition with the court Thursday in In re: Marriage Cases, which includes Proposition 22 Legal Defense and Education Fund v. City and County of San Francisco. The petition asks the justices to delay the effective date of their May 15 decision on marriage until after California voters have been heard on a constitutional amendment in November (www.telladf.org/news/story.aspx?cid=4528).
