Newspaper reactions to California Marriage Cases

Joshua Baker at the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy has written this paper (pdf) discussing media reaction to California’s marriage ruling.

He writes:

The major fear voiced by newspapers opposing the ruling is that the undemocratic imposition of same-sex marriage will spark a “culture war” similar to that sparked by Roe v. Wade’s overturning of abortion laws, and that the gay rights movement would be better served by trusting the democratic process and the rapid change in opinions among their fellow citizens.

Tell Thurgood Marshall and the children Topeka Kansas that they should have waited on the political process. Tell that to Mildred Loving. The bottom line remains: your side can’t offer a reason for why the majority should deny protections and rights to the minority beyond your own dislikes.

We live under a system of limited government, so the majority does not have the right to impose their will without a compelling reason.
