Constitutional amendment approved by Ariz. Senate for November ballot
PHOENIX — Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund say they will defend the proposed constitutional amendment on marriage approved by the Arizona Senate Friday against any attempts to have it removed from the November ballot.
“This referendum gives Arizonans the opportunity to decide the future of marriage in Arizona instead of leaving it in the hands of judges and politicians. ADF will defend the amendment free of charge if any desperate lawsuits are filed in an attempt to evade the democratic process and silence the voice of the people,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Brian Raum.
“All one needs to do is look at California to see why Arizona needs to have a constitutional amendment on marriage. California proves that a state law is not enough to defend marriage,” noted Raum.
The Arizona Senate approved the proposed amendment in a late session Friday. ADF ally, The Center for Arizona Policy (www.azpolicy.org), was a major proponent of getting the amendment approved for the ballot.
The proposed amendment reads, “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state.”
ADF is a legal alliance of Christian attorneys and like-minded organizations defending the right of people to freely live out their faith. Launched in 1994, ADF employs a unique combination of strategy, training, funding, and litigation to protect and preserve religious liberty, the sanctity of life, marriage, and the family.
