Texas: State Board of Education Considers Bible Course Requirements
The Free Market Foundation has issued a press release indicating:
WHAT: The Texas State Board of Education will be hearing testimony today on the current TEKS for Bible electives to be taught in Texas high schools. Just last week, the Texas Attorney General sent a letter approving the constitutionality of the current TEKS for these courses. A decision to accept or reject the current TEKS is expected tomorrow.
Time: 1:00p.m. Today
Location: William B. Travis Building, Room 1-104
WHO: Free Market Foundation’s Director of Legislative Affairs, Jonathan Saenz, will be testifying today before an SBOE committee in favor of the current TEKS for Bible electives. Saenz was instrumental in helping pass Rep. Warren Chisum’s bill (H.R. 1287) requiring all Texas school districts to offer Bible electives and has expertise in constitutional law.
“We anticipate some token opposition from enemies of academic freedom, but at the end of the day, we are confident the SBOE will follow the Attorney General’s opinion and make the right decision,” said Saenz.
