Same-sex “marriage” debate is similar in California and Germany
Brigitte Zypries, member of the German Social Democratic Party, writes at SFGate:
After examining the development of the law in our two countries, I can say with certainty that we share one basic conviction: People who enter into a long-term domestic arrangement as a gay or lesbian couple and take on mutual social and financial responsibility may not be treated under the law as if they were complete strangers. And this is how I understand the U.S. Supreme Court ruling: The court affirmed that the Constitution allows prohibition of same-sex marriages, but a majority of the court also said lawmakers have the power to provide same-sex couples with rights otherwise afforded only to spouses - for example, in the fields of medical insurance and inheritance law.
