Churches can tout issues, not hopefuls

Marji Allred was shocked when she heard a Mormon bishop urge his congregation to support Proposition 102, the marriage amendment that goes before Arizona voters Nov. 4 . . .

Allred, who describes herself as a “nominal Mormon,” said she thought the endorsement smacked of a dangerous mix of religion and politics, something that might imperil the church’s tax status. The measure would amend the state Constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman . . .

It’s absolutely something churches can talk about,” said Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund . . .
