“Sexting” can be a sex offense

Kathie Basset reports in The Telegraph:

“This is a hard issue for teens to grasp,” said Sgt. Dave Vucich of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. “Teens need to think before they click.

“Any image of someone under 18 is illegal to possess,” he said. “The person who has taken the photo, even if it’s of themselves, is involved in the possession and manufacturing of child pornography. If the image is sent, then he or she is also involved in the distribution.

“If the person is under 18, the felony goes on a juvenile record,” Vucich said. “This kind of offense requires registration as a sex offender, a label that doesn’t ever go away and one that becomes public once they become an adult.”
