NC Officials Defend Charter School Cap

North Carolina Family Policy Council: “North Carolina’s education leaders have asked the Obama Administration to rethink its emphasis on charter schools in making determinations for the distribution of federal funds for innovations and accountability in education. In a letter dated August 27, State School Superintendent Dr. June Atkinson and State Board of Education Chairman Dr. Bill Harrison joined representatives from the NC Association of Educators, NC Parent Teach Association, NC School Boards Association, and NC Association of School Administrators to ask Education Secretary Arne Duncan to reconsider putting North Carolina at a disadvantage to receive a portion of $4.35 billion in Race to the Top grant funds because of the state’s cap on charter schools . . . ”

Archbishop of Canterbury laments loss of Christian knowledge

Times Online Article of Faith blog: “The Archbishop of Canterbury has blamed education and pluralism for Britain’s loss of Christian culture. He said the Church does still have its foot in the door but the foot is being ‘squashed very painfully’. Writers in the past such as PG Wodehouse could assume knowledge in the reader of the Bible and Hymns Ancient & Modern. No longer. ‘It’s all gone, gone because of shifting patterns of education not just religious education, it’s gone because of a much more anxious awareness of a plural society and not wanting to privilege one religious tradition over another.’”

Obama sets stage for using budget maneuver to pass health reform

The Hill: “But the more likely scenario is that Republicans will continue to oppose Obama’s plan, and the president later this fall will be able to note he tried to strike a deal with the GOP but could not. That will set up a Democratic argument that Senate leaders have been forced to use a partisan budget tool known as reconciliation to pass a health bill through the Senate by a simple majority, instead of 60 votes. Under the budget plan they passed earlier this year, Democrats could invoke the reconciliation process on Oct. 15.”

ADF attorneys submit motion to defend California Marriage Act

Pipeline News: “ADF attorneys and ADF-allied attorney Andrew Pugno submitted a motion to intervene Thursday on behalf of the campaign committee for Proposition 8, ProtectMarriage.com, and the former proposition’s official proponents, asking the court to allow it to become a defendant in the lawsuit. ‘In America, we respect the results of fair elections. But once again, those who want to redefine marriage are using a lawsuit to attempt to achieve what they have not been able to obtain from either the people of California or the California Supreme Court,’ said ADF Senior Counsel Brian Raum.”

Indiana: “Goshen city leaders decide against gay protections”

On Top Magazine: “After a heated six hour debate on the issue, the Goshen, Indiana City Council voted last week against altering its civil rights ordinance to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity (transgender protections), local broadcaster WSBT reported . . . ‘This newly proposed ordinance has not passed public scrutiny and caters to political special interests,’ Lavy said in a statement before testifying. ‘Laws should protect rights, not grant special privileges based strictly on someone’s sexual confusion.’”
