Maryland: Impeachment of AG over marriage opinion may lead to legislative showdown

The Capital: “Dwyer, R-Glen Burnie, said yesterday that he will offer impeachment charges against Attorney General Douglas Gansler on March 31, even though House Speaker Michael E. Busch, D-Annapolis, has said he will follow legal advice that the House has no authority to so . . . House Minority Leader Anthony O’Donnell, R-Calvert, would not say whether he will back Dwyer . . . but he generally supports the substance of Dwyer’s complaints. He characterized Gansler’s opinion and the judgment that the House has no impeachment authority in the matter as ‘offensive,’ and introduced his own bill to prohibit recognition of same-sex marriages until the Court of Appeals or General Assembly makes a decision.”
