Government, civil society, and religious freedom

Clifford Bob writing at The Immanent Frame: “Should the U.S. government employ American civil society to engage religious communities overseas in promotion of a ‘religious freedom agenda’? Scott Appleby, the Chicago Council’s Task Force Report (TFR), and the Obama administration think so. But there are serious problems with NGOs playing this role, either as an express supplement to, or possibly a covert screen for, U.S. foreign policy.”

The report includes a dissent and response among task force members on whether the Establishment Clause imposes restrictions on the way the U.S. pursues engagement with religious communities abroad.”
