Congratulations to allied attorneys Jim Bopp, Simon Calvert, Jason Craddock, Brad Dacus, Kevin Snider, Matt McReynolds, Steve Fitschen, Barry Hodge, and Demetrios Stratis for their recent successes listed below. Please take time to congratulate them!

James Bopp, Jr. (Bopp, Coleson, and Bostrom; James Madison Center for Free Speech). Jim is on a roll since his victory in Citizens United! He recently obtained another preliminary injunction, this time against enforcement of two Wisconsin election law statutes in Hatchett v. Eich. The statutes would have required his client to register his activities and put a disclaimer on mailers and flyers he wished to distribute in opposition to a local referendum.

Simon Calvert (Christian Institute, U.K.). The Christian Institute has obtained a favorable settlement for religious discrimination against a school receptionist, Jennie Cain. Ms. Cain was prevented from working for four months and given a written warning simply for sending an e-mail to friends and family, from her home computer, requesting prayer about a teacher reprimanding her 5-year-old daughter for talking about Jesus.

Jason Craddock (Attorney at Law). Jason obtained a favorable settlement for pro-life demonstrators in Fox Valley Families Against Planned Parenthood v. City of Aurora. The settlement requires Aurora to amend two ordinances, mandates First Amendment training for Aurora police, and establishes a grievance process for resolving disputes between demonstrators and Aurora officials.

Brad Dacus, Kevin Snider, Matt McReynolds (Pacific Justice Institute). PJI successfully intervened in Michael Newdow’s latest California challenge to the Pledge of Allegiance. In Newdow v. Rio Linda Union School District, 597 F.3d 1007 (9th Cir. 2010), the court ruled that the Pledge is constitutional.

Steve Fitschen (National Legal Foundation) and Barry Hodge (Attorney at Law). Steve and Barry filed an amicus brief in support of the positive outcome in the Newdow ruling.

Demetrios Stratis (Demetrios K. Stratis, L.L.C.). Demetrios succeeded in getting the Jersey City Post Office to reverse a decision requiring an employee to work during a religious holiday, in violation of her beliefs. His demand letter scared the Post Master into immediate compliance!

Don’t forget: if you have had a recent success or noteworthy accomplishment, we want to hear from you even if the issue is unrelated to the ADF core areas! It’s a great way for us to encourage each other.

Please note that we sometimes report successes or noteworthy items that are not within ADF areas of focus and that would not qualify for pro bono credit.

Thank you,
