FDA Approves Ella Drug, Pro-Life Groups Say It’s Untested and Causes Abortions

LifeNews: “Leaders of four pro-life groups participated in a conference call this afternoon to discuss the potential decision by the FDA to approve the abortion drug ella. They are concerned the decision will be billed as okaying a morning after pill even though the drug operates as an abortion agent.”

Washington Post: “The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved a controversial new form of emergency contraception that can prevent a pregnancy for as many as five days after sex. The decision to allow the sale of the pill, which will be marketed under the brand name ‘ella,’ was welcomed by family-planning proponents as a crucial new option to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Critics, however, condemned the decision, arguing that it was misleading to approve ella as a contraceptive because the drug could also be used to cause abortions.”

Family Research Council Press Release: “Jeanne Monahan, Director of the Center for Human Dignity at the Family Research Council, had the following to say: ‘The FDA opted against including the critical fact that Ella can cause an abortion on a baby already implanted in its mother’s womb in the drug labeling information. This decision flies in the face of the Obama Administration’s promise to transparency and a commitment to science. The difference between preventing and destroying life is enormous, and women have the right to know how this drug will act on their bodies and on their babies.’”
