National group asks Arkansas officials to withhold from prayer at meetings

Texarkana Gazette: “The Searcy City Council, which last month approved an ordinance allowing the national motto, ‘In God We Trust,’ to be displayed on city property, has been urged by a national group to cease holding prayers at its regular meetings. Mayor Belinda LaForce said a group called the Freedom From Religion Foundation sent the city a three-page letter arguing that praying in public at council meetings is unconstitutional, as a violation of the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of religion.”
