NYT discussion: Do home schoolers deserve a tax break?

NYT Discussion: “Will the idea succeed in the new Congress, given some conservatives’ longtime opposition, on the grounds that the credits might open the door to more government regulation of education? How would such a system work? Is it a threat to public education, as its critics claim?”

See especially the contribution of the Home School Legal Defense Association’s William A. Estrada: “A federal income tax credit for educational expenses would help all parents provide greater resources for their children. Tax credits are superior to vouchers because the family keeps its own money and is not the recipient of federal funds. This eliminates any First Amendment concerns if a family purchases religious educational materials, or any danger of federal control coming along with the money.”
