Bill in Congress would upgrade records of those discharged under DADT

Stars and Stripes: A bill circulating in the House would upgrade the service records of gay, lesbian and bisexual troops who were discharged due to sexual orientation and eventually open the door to veterans’ benefits. The Restore Honor to Service Members Act was proposed Thursday by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., and Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., according to a joint statement from their offices.

Same-sex marriage isn’t ‘inevitable’ | Penna Dexter at Baptist Press

Penna Dexter at Baptist Press: Robert Oscar Lopez is an associate professor — with tenure — of English and classics at California State University, Northridge. In a recent column at the Witherspoon Institute’s Public Discourse, he argues that those who insist legal same-sex marriage is inevitable are making a couple of fallacious assumptions. One is “that the increase in support for same sex marriage will be consistent over time rather than fickle.” The second is that same sex marriage is gaining support because people are becoming more enlightened about it, often from knowing someone who is gay.

GOP lawmaker: Teach grade-school classes on traditional gender roles

The Hill: Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) said grade-school students should be taught classes about traditional gender roles in a floor speech on Tuesday. “You know, maybe part of the problem is we need to go back into the schools at a very early age, maybe at the grade-school level, and have a class for the young girls and have a class for the young boys and say, you know, this is what’s important,” Gingrey said.

Illinois Proponents of Marriage Redefinition Gearing Up

“Is the momentum for gay marriage real, or just media hype?” | The Week

The Week: In fact, it wasn’t even close, say Paul Hitlin, Amy Mitchell, and Mark Jurkowitz at Pew’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. In nearly 500 articles and TV segments from March 18 to May 12, “stories with more statements supporting same-sex marriage outweighed those with more statements opposing it by a margin of roughly 5-to-1.” . . . No kidding, says Rich Lizardo at The American Spectator. “The report might as well have been titled ‘The Sky Is Blue’ because this only confirms what everyone already knew.”

We Should Reform Child Support | Phyllis Schlafly at Townhall

Phyllis Schlafly at Townhall: Child support formulas are based on the ridiculous notion that a father would make those same sacrifices for an ex-wife who is living with her new husband or boyfriend and for children he never or seldom sees. Many fathers would happily do more to support their children if they got to see their kids more and were more engaged in their lives. But current child support laws have reverse incentives: The more the mother prevents such contact, the more child support she receives. Child support is not even really child support, because the mother has no obligation to spend the money on the kids, and faithful payment of child support does not buy the father time with his kids. The purpose of child support is to allow the mother to maintain a household and standard of living comparable to the father’s.

Teens can’t find jobs: economy, poor work ethic to blame

NCPA Policy Digest: A cultural shift in work ethic also could be partially to blame, says Clark Hodges, a financial strategist for the Dallas-based investment advisory firm Hodges Capital Management. “The way (teens) have grown up, they’ve always been handed things,” he says. “They don’t have the incentive or drive to work. That may be a generalization, but I think it’s a big factor.”

All female roaring aside, children still need fathers | Kathleen Parker at USA Today

Kathleen Parker at USA Today: My argument that men should be saved is that, despite certain imperfections, men are fundamentally good and are sort of pleasant to have around. Most women still like to fall in love with them; all children want a father no matter how often we try to persuade ourselves otherwise. If we continue to impose low expectations and negative messaging on men and boys, future women won’t have much to choose from. We are nearly there.

Illinois Cardinal on marriage: ‘The legal creation of what is naturally impossible is not inevitable’

Catholic New World: Nonetheless, the legal creation of what is naturally impossible is not inevitable. Cultural change can be redirected so that the long road to obtain respect that has been traveled by many homosexually oriented persons can be maintained without destroying the institution of natural marriage. Since the difference between men and women is different from racial difference, same-sex marriage is not a civil rights issue. A newly invented civil right cannot be used to destroy a moral good, lest society itself go into decline.

Are Pastors Finally Waking Up and Ready to Address Biblical Moral Issues?

Nathan Cherry at Engage Family Minute: The first thing we need to understand is that the issues of life and marriage are not merely cultural, social, or political issues. They are first and foremost biblical moral issues. They have, unfortunately been so politicized however that many pastors have failed in their duties to preach and teach on these critical issues in light of the Gospel

The Marriage Debate: The conjugal view of marriage leaves us just as free for companionship.

Sherif Girgis , Ryan T. Anderson , Robert P. George at National Review: In What Is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense and in various follow-up pieces, we have argued for several ideas: Reducing marriage to the more general category of sexual domestic partnership is a deep mistake. Marriage — the human good that marriage law should foster — is rather a union of persons at every level (mind, heart, and body) and for the whole of life, inherently oriented to family life

The joint editorial was written by Hector Avalos, Robert R. Cargill and Kenneth Atkinson and published in the Des Moines Register on Sunday. The men teach at Iowa State University, University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa, respectively.
