Just over five years ago, on April 18, 2007, the Supreme Court announced its opinion in Gonzales v. Carhart, holding that the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act was constitutional. Since then, we have lived in a world where partial-birth abortions have been illegal in the United States under federal law (and now many state laws) . . . If we accept Guttmacher’s figure of approximately 2,200 partial-birth abortions per year, then the decision in Gonzales – upholding the law and lifting the injunction against it – has prevented 11,000 partial-birth abortions from occurring.

That’s 3,500 female suicides a week, 15,000 female suicides a month, and 182,500 female suicides a year.

To my knowledge the words “religious freedom” or “abortion” were not mentioned. Yet, the Court’s decision will have enormous implications for those these fundamental rights.

"No one should force Rhode Islanders to subsidize other people's abortions under the guise of healthcare reform, especially through illegitimate, extra-constitutional methods," he contends. It violates virtually every provision of the First Amendment, as a matter of fact," notes Casey Mattox, attorney and spokesman for ADF.
The Examiner: Montgomery County's top attorney is standing behind a local law that requires pregnancy centers to post signs in their waiting rooms informing patients if they don't employ medically licensed professionals, even though a judge threw out a similar ordinance in Baltimore . . . But now the Alliance Defense Fund, a District-based organization that focuses on anti-abortion and freedom of speech cases -- and represents Centro Tepeyac in the ongoing lawsuit -- says the ordinance won't be on the books much longer. "What it communicates to women is that the government thinks you should go somewhere else," said attorney Casey Mattox. "The laws are virtually indistinguishable. They intentionally crafted this bill to make sure it would not cover abortions but would single out pregnancy centers."

Gazette.net: "The Baltimore case, though, is rather directly on point and should make it clear that the Montgomery County law also is unconstitutional," said Casey Mattox, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund. The Alliance Defense Fund, based in Washington, D.C., specializes in free speech and anti-abortion cases. The organization is representing the pregnancy resource center for free. Mattox said both laws restrict pregnancy centers that do not provide abortions, and both also regulate the centers based on their speech. Both laws, he said, were specifically intended to avoid imposing restrictions on abortion facilities."That's viewpoint-based discrimination," Mattox said, adding that abortion clinics are in need of further regulation.

And taking Vanderbilt at its word, that it truly does protect the conscience rights of its employees, Vanderbilt may now even be ahead of the game. The First Amendment has triumphed this bowl season. With 34 games played and only the BCS National Championship Game left to go the school with the better (or less poor) treatment of the First Amendment rights of students and faculty is 19-15."
