WorldNetDaily reports: A lawsuit has been filed against Eastern Michigan University, accusing the school of tossing a student out of a graduate counseling program because she refused to endorse homosexuality as morally good. Julea Ward filed suit after she was dismissed from the school’s counseling training for not affirming homosexuality and then refusing to recant her beliefs in “disciplinary proceedings,” according to the Alliance Defense Fund Center for Academic Freedom.

The school dismissed Julea Ward from the program because she would not agree prior to a counseling session to affirm a client’s homosexual behavior and would not retract her stance in subsequent disciplinary proceedings.

AU would like for student fees to be an instrument of government control over expressive organizations . . .

Kane, where the primary issue at oral argument was whether the panel was bound by the Ninth Circuit’s high-school ruling and must also limit the free-association rights of university students. This week, the answer came with shocking speed: neither high-school nor college religious groups can impose religious eligibility requirements on members or leaders . . . From a common-sense standpoint, this is absurd . . . From a legal standpoint, the Ninth Circuit is now decisively out of step with at least two other circuits . . .”

I think Eugene’s key flaw is to treat the university environment and university student-organization system as essentially like any other government program, when they most assuredly are not.

. believers came to realize they’d made a “devil’s bargain” when they decided to more or less “leave aside their beliefs when entering the public debate.” There is a major (and overlooked) reason why people of faith began to realize that they had made a profound mistake: The explosive growth of government.

It is difficult to overstate the extent of leftist ambitions in the education process. From the earliest ages (just look at the new push for universal preschool) to the last days of a graduate degree, the left zealously guards not just its legally privileged position as ultimate arbiter of the content of your child’s education but also its dominant numbers in the teachers’ unions (have you seen what they teach in schools of education these days?) and the university professoriate.

On Friday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution opened its op-ed pages to competing pieces discussing the Alliance Defense Fund’s free-speech victory.

Isn’t it interesting how universities are so quick to defend leftists in the name of “academic freedom” but to silence other ideas they deem offensive in the name of “tolerance” and “inclusiveness”?
