Gary McCaleb at Townhall: When President Obama prepared to repeal the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy in July 2011, defenders of marriage and religious freedom warned that the repeal would open Pandora’s Box. Military chaplains even sought congressional action to protect their rights of conscience. The predominant concern was that the President’s actions would usher in attempts to redefine marriage on military installations, which would, in turn, force chaplains to perform the ceremonies for same-sex couples in uniform . . . in the months since the repeal, it turns out the concerns were well-founded.

Gary McCaleb at Townhall: For decades, atheist groups have strategically involved themselves in questions of religious freedom, and they have done so chiefly by fighting to have all Christian symbols and texts removed from public view. But in recent years, as this fight has continued, it’s become evident that it’s not just symbols and texts they want removed from public view, rather, it’s Christians themselves.

ADF attorney Gary McCaleb at the Speak Up Movement Church Blog: When highway patrolmen wanted to honor thirteen troopers who died serving in the vast expanses of Utah, they decided to use roadside crosses. The private Utah Highway Patrol Association then used volunteer labor, donated materials, and a lot of heart to carefully place memorials at or near where each trooper died.

ADF attorney Gary McCaleb at the Speak Up Movement Church Blog: But from that horror emerged the remarkable story of four Army chaplains who acted with uncommon valor—steadying the panicked troops, guiding them to safety, urging calm amidst the chaos. As the ship pitched in its death throes, the four handed their own life jackets to troopers who had none, and with that final act of grace they surrendered their lives for the sake of others.

Gary McCaleb at the Speak Up Movement Church Blog: The 1960s blockbuster movie Seven Days in May recounted a fictional plot by military leaders to overthrow a president who pushed for nuclear disarmament . . . Recently, House committees have been asking hard questions of some generals and admirals—and much to their shame, those active duty commanders tap danced around the hard truths that were set forth months ago by almost 1200 senior veteran officers—retired flag and general officers who can speak without career fears hanging over them. But their evasion did not go unnoticed, and now some of the best minds in America are rebelling against this radical “repeal” of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

ADF attorney Gary McCaleb is a guest blogger at the Constituting America Blog: "Federalist No. 76 recognizes that every government needs a stable of civil servants, who in turn must be secured for service with reasonable dispatch and with some assurance of quality. The paper plays off a consistent theme of our founding era—to balance each grant of authority (and concomitant power) with some restraint on the authority. In a nutshell, Hamilton takes the familiar balancing of powers among the executive, judicial, and legislative branches down a notch as he considers how to expeditiously staff the government with high quality persons, while restraining the appointment power lest it be used by the President to untoward ends.
