KIVA.com ABC 7: Brown’s lawyers said there’s a more practical explanation. “It was late in the day (when we got the subpoena), and it said that we had to produce all of these documents the very next morning. This is like an 18-paragraph request for documents. There was not enough time to file all of these documents, so we filed a motion for a protective order. Under Texas law, when you file a protective order, you don’t have to produce the documents unless the court says you have to produce the documents. Once the court said to produce the documents, we produced the documents. Where’s the controversy?” said Brown’s Alliance Defense Fund lawyer, Joel Oster.

El Paso Times: Brown’s attorney, Joel Oster, said the document released by Walker on Monday is unimportant, calling it “a non-issue.” . . . But Oster, one of Brown’s attorneys, downplayed the document’s significance. “The minutes that you refer to are a non-issue,” Oster said in an email. “They were properly given to the other side pursuant to the subpoena and the court’s instructions. They don’t state that the church itself was involved. “In any event, the court already stated that it believes that the church circulated the petitions. … What the court held, however, was that First Amendment rights were at stake and it would not stop the election.”

Engage Family Minute: Jordan Lorence, senior vice-president with the Alliance Defense Fund, has been the chief litigator on this case. Jordan wrote an instructive blog post on the topic (copied below), but also took the time to join me for a brief discussion over the phone. I hope you will listen to it – especially if you are a pastor or elder committed to planting churches in West Virginia – and share it with your friends. [audio at the link]

Catholic News Agency (CNA): “This is (the) strategy of the opposition – manipulate the truth by claiming that there is a global right to abortion and repeat it over and over again,” said Piero A. Tozzi, senior legal council at the Alliance Defense Fund, in a speech to Human Life International’s Second International Congress for Truth and Life. “Repeated enough, perception becomes reality,” he warned, as he described the attempt to raise non-binding statements about abortion “rights” into “something that must be followed and obeyed.”

Huffington Post (embeds Fox 23 Video): “The school district cannot engage in that type of discriminatory behavior,” ADF attorney Matt Sharp told KOKI Fox 23. “The school has to remain neutral in all of this, it can’t pick and choose which group it likes or doesn’t like based on the religious content or viewpoint of their message.”

LifeSiteNews.com: Anne Marie eventually came to believe that nursing was where she belonged, especially in the field of women’s health. “To be a nurse is to care incredibly for other people, to care deeply for them, to care for what is best for them. You use your heart and you use your hands. That’s it, at its core,” says Anne-Marie in a video of her story, prepared by the Alliance Defense Fund. {more}

Neil Ferguson at WSJ: Tocqueville also foresaw exactly how this regulatory state would suffocate the spirit of free enterprise: “It rarely forces one to act, but it constantly opposes itself to one’s acting; it does not destroy, it prevents things from being born; it does not tyrannize, it hinders, compromises, enervates, extinguishes, dazes, and finally reduces [the] nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid and industrious animals of which the government is the shepherd.” If that makes you bleat with frustration, there’s still hope.

Reuters: Omar’s group, Ghurabaa al-Sham, wasn’t defeated by the government. It was dismantled by a rival band of revolutionaries – hardline Islamists. The Islamists moved against them at the beginning of May. After three days of sporadic clashes Omar’s more moderate fighters, accused by the Islamists of looting, caved in and dispersed, according to local residents. Omar said the end came swiftly.
