"It's part of a trend in Latin America where you have supreme courts imposing abortion where the people and the legislature are opposed to abortion," says Tozzi.
LifeNews: Alliance Defense Fund Senior Legal Counsel Piero Tozzi responded to the decision to allow, what he calls, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Tribunal’s decision to “decriminalize the killing of pre-born children for eugenic reasons.” “Every innocent life deserves to be protected. Instead, Brazil’s high court has approved of slaughtering the country’s most vulnerable people, the severely disabled. Eugenic abortion further erodes respect not only for human dignity in general, but the dignity of the disabled in particular. Protecting the innocent is a chief duty of the legislature, and the court was wrong to overstep its authority and tear down the protections long ago established by Brazil’s lawmakers–protections that are consistent with the pro-life views of most Brazilians.”

LifeNews: Last week the Dilma Rousseff administration was pressed by CEDAW (Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women) about an alleged number of 200,000 deaths of women each year because of illegal abortion in Brazil. The Brazilian representatives showed no willingness to question this patently inflated number.

National Catholic Register: “It’s part of a trend in Latin America that often doesn’t get noticed: that there is the ‘latex left,’ and certainly countries like Uruguay and Argentina — they’re pushing this pro-abortion, pro-same-sex ‘marriage’ agenda, (and) the justices in Mexico City [are too],” said Tozzi. “But elsewhere the left is more of an old left that emphasizes economics rather than the ‘latex left’ issues,” he added . . . Tozzi sees signs of hope in other countries as well: “You also have the example of Ollanta Humala in Peru, who was elected president about half a year ago, with broad left-wing support. For a variety of reasons, he has rejected the ‘latex left’ agenda. His women’s affairs minister, a big pro-abortion supporter, was fired by him about a month ago and replaced with a woman who’s an evangelical Christian. So there are certain elements of the left in Latin America that are distinct from the latex left, which people sometimes overlook.”

Fred De Sam Lazaro at PBS NewsHour : Brazil's plummeting birth rate would seem like a triumph for the country's women's movement, which has long fought for information about, and access to, contraception. Today, in what remains the world's largest Roman Catholic country, 80 percent of women of childbearing age are on some form of artificial contraception, long forbidden by the Church. The total fertility rate, which was six children per woman in 1960, is now 1.9. The rate is 2.05 in the United States.
