Baptist Press: Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel of the Alliance Defense Fund, said pastors in particular should not be afraid to speak biblically from the pulpit without fear of reprisal, even when their opinion is contrary to that of President Obama. "The fact that the pastor may be responding to a comment from the president doesn't make the biblical comments off-limits," Stanley said. The ADF campaigns against U.S. law that prohibits pastors from using the pulpit to oppose political candidates. "At ADF, we believe that restriction is unconstitutional," Stanley said. "Our point is that we should let the pastors and the churches of America debate what is wrong or right."

The rapid increases in divorce, living together without the benefit of marriage, and out-of-wedlock births created new demands for the application of laws that were originally intended for husband, wife, and children. Divorce laws for the dividing of property and child support were broadened to apply to cohabiting couples who split up. It did not take long before same-sex couples began to seek inclusion in the publicly recognized structure for their relationships.

Eric C. Redmond at Baptist Press: Your recent expression of your understanding of 'marriage' is troubling to us. There are no tenets that can be identified as Christian that allow for anyone to view homosexuality as acceptable. The Christian faith holds to the Bible as the truth, for it has given ample evidence of being the very words of God to man. It is the Bible that reveals marriage to be a union between a man and a woman; it is the Bible that reveals all homosexual activity to be sinful. Therefore we would reject your so-called Christian understanding of same-sex marriage as uninformed and false.

Robert Knight at Townhall: Someone should survey pastors who support Obama and ask: Which is more important – electing a man on the basis of race, or upholding the integrity of the faith and what the Scriptures say about marriage? Citing Genesis 2:24, Jesus said in Matthew 19:5: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

The American: Therefore, any strategy of waiting for demographics to realize the maximalist position of gay marriage advocates across the country looks to be, at the very least, a lengthy endeavor. States on the margins, like California and Washington, where initial bans commanded marginal majorities, might support gay marriage in the near future. But on a wider scale, movement on the issue, though real, is likely to be far too slow to bring about dramatic change nationally anytime soon . . . The gay marriage movement might have other reasons to be a little less optimistic. Young voters change their political views as they age, and the overwhelming liberal tendencies of college campuses are not reflected in the American electorate.
