Louisiana Family Forum puts “the fear of God” into Bourbon street strip clubs

. . . The “they” Martiny refers to is the Louisiana Family Forum, a religious lobbying group whose growing influence has put the fear of God into the topless clubs along Bourbon Street.

Smith’s bill failed to make it out of the Senate Commerce Committee, but the forum intends to press the issue again, director Gene Mills said. And people on both sides agree it will pass by a wide margin if it comes up for a full vote.

Few politicians would be willing to stick their neck out for an industry many consider to be immoral and cast a vote that would allow their opponents to brand them as pro-stripper.

If the bill is passed as currently framed — essentially outlawing lap dances, the main source of income for dancers — club operators say it will kill the industry . . .
