WHERE:  John Adams Courthouse, One Pemberton Square, Boston

BOSTON — Alliance Defense Fund Senior Counsel Jordan Lorence will be available to answer questions from the media following his oral arguments defending supporters of a proposed state constitutional amendment.  The amendment defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

“Marriage has become an extremely emotional issue because activists are demanding that the focus be on political special interests rather than on the legal aspects of marriage,” said Lorence.  “Legally, marriage is society’s way of making sure men take responsibility for their children.”

The proposed amendment states, “When recognizing marriages entered into after the adoption of this amendment by the people, the Commonwealth and its political subdivisions shall define marriage only as the union of one man and one woman.”

“The voters of Massachusetts have gathered an overwhelming number of signatures to bring this marriage amendment to the ballot for a vote,” said Lorence.  “We are urging Massachusetts’ high court to allow the people to decide whether to ratify this amendment, and to reject the extreme legal arguments by activists who brought this lawsuit to stop the people from voting.”
