11/24/2011- Death Toll Mounts in Post-Roe II World

An estimated 10,000 women have died from illegal abortions since January 1, 2009, when states began prohibiting abortions. Today, on Thanksgiving, we take a look back at the events that led to Roe II, explore the details surrounding the death of one young woman, and we ask our readers whether overturning Roe v. Wade has resulted in a positive change for society.

The death-knell for legal abortion can be traced to June 21, 2007, when the Supreme Court released its opinion in the infamous Carhart case, holding that the Federal Government could prohibit the “partial birth” abortion procedure on moral grounds. The end of abortion rights seemed assured in November, 2008, when Republican nominee Mitt Romney was elected to the presidency by a landslide, and the Republicans overwhelmingly gained control of Congress.
