Vander Plaats: Iowa Chief Justice should outline plan for remaining justices to resign

Bob Vander Plaats has this commentary in the Des Moines Register: “Like the Iowa House and governor’s office, the Iowa Supreme Court will have new leadership in 2011. For the first time, Justice Mark Cady will deliver the annual Condition of the Court address to the Legislature. The new chief justice (originally appointed by Branstad), who served as the author of the unconstitutional Varnum opinion, will make his remarks only days after filling the vacancy created by Iowans’ ouster of Chief Justice Marsha Ternus.
In deference to the will of Iowans and to the man who originally appointed him, Justice Cady should use his speech to outline a plan for the remaining four Iowa Supreme Court justices to resign in a responsible fashion.”
